I Try Out a Fobus CH Active Retention Holster

A few weeks ago I attended the USCCA Concealed Carry Expo. While walking the expo floor I stopped in at the Fobus holster booth and met Michael an executive with Fobus.

Michael proceeded to show me the array of holsters offered by Fobus. Now I am somewhat acquainted with Fobus, I have owned one for my 22 auto for a couple of years and I like it.

Talk turned to active retention holsters. I was quick to point out that some of the gun clubs that I shoot at have banned some push-button active retention holsters due to safety concerns. Michael showed me their CH series. These holsters have addressed the design problems that some other manufacturers have had.

The Problem

Most push-button active retention holsters have a hook the grabs the trigger guard locking the pistol into the holster. When the pistol is drawn a button is pressed with the index finger releasing the locking hook. The problem arises when you are pushing a button to release the gun and that button is in line with the trigger. This sets up a bad situation as the trigger finger comes off of the button directly onto the trigger possibly causing an accidental discharge.

The Fobus Design

The Fobus CH-series has never had that problem. Fobus pioneered the injection-molded holster. They began designing holsters for the Israeli Military and Special Services as well as law enforcement. The designers at Fobus realize that their holsters will be used under stress when fine motor skills are somewhat limited. The CH series of active retention holsters do have a short bar that latches onto the trigger guard ensuring the weapon is securely held in the holster until the release button is pressed. The difference is the button is located in line with the side of the frame precisely where you want your trigger finger located during the draw stroke. This makes perfect sense to me and I needed one for my 1911.

The one that I brought home was an outside the waistband paddle design for the 1911. The first impression is of a well-built holster. The fit and finish are very nice. I find the paddle design is very comfortable on the hip. The pistol slides into the holster easily with an audible click signaling that the gun is locked in.

A press of the release button allows for a quick, smooth draw stroke with your trigger finger aligned on the side of the frame of the firearm just as promised.

I am looking forward to years of dependable use from this Fobus holster. I like them and I think you might too.
